Mark
We loved going to the park with our kids when they were young. It was a great time of fresh air and of burning off some of their “spirited” energy. Lots of children would be there. And my breath would always be taken away whenever I saw the youngest of children – who didn’t even realize their parents were watching – being kind to another child. One child helping another. Or bringing a toy to a child who was crying. Such tender and honest examples of unconditional love - pointing to God’s overwhelming love and care for us.
SAY TO GOD: “HALLOWED BE YOUR NAME!”
When my elderly father was dying, he needed constant care. I spent time moving and bathing him – and just being together. It was a season of providing care to the person who had given his life to help meet the needs of his family. He did not do that “perfectly” – but he did it with purpose and without expectations. His failing health and passing included difficult days. But I treasure that final time of our “roles” being switched – and being used to care for the one who had cared for me.
SAY TO GOD: “MAY YOUR WILL BE DONE!”
I contracted a bacterial infection while teaching overseas in a remote rural area. The pain was almost unbearable. I was unable to even think of the words to pray in my head – except just to thank God for being with me and for those who were praying for me. The father of a student of mine was a doctor. He examined me and got me the medications needed. It was a sweet time of being a recipient of the love and care of the body of Christ.
SAY TO GOD: “GIVE US TODAY OUR DAILY BREAD!”
During an international trip , I was invited to a worshiping group meeting in the back of a home. The local pastor was a loving, soft-spoken man with an ever-present smile. He shared with me how people in the community were threatening him to stop leading worship. My sadness about what he faced daily was met with his boldness and assurance – and with his asking only for strength and peace as he continued to share the love of Jesus.
SAY TO GOD: “DELIVER US FROM EVIL!”
